I am a Photographer based in Hull, East Yorkshire, England and was first introduced to genealogy when my father passed his research over to me.

BEFORE YOU USE THIS SITE

It is only early days of yet! Right now this website only contains records from 1671 to the present day. Many more will be added, I'm sure. This will take time, so be patient!

ORIGINS OF THE HARBOUR NAME

The Harbour family can trace their ancestors back to the ancient territories of England between the 11th and 12th centuries, and first appeared in ancient medieval records in Suffolk,England, the name is also said to have dwellings for several hundred years in Herefordshire, England.

From very early on the Harbour family not only held lands and estates in Suffolk but were also actively allied with other influential families. They also branched out into other counties, before taking the long voyage to the new world.

The Dictionary of Surnames defines the Harbour name as: 'Harber: English: Metonymic occupational name of 'The Harbourer' one who shelters or harbours people, one who provides lodging, a keeper of a lodging house, from late Olde English, herebeorg shelter, lodging. The dictionary lists several variations of the name: Harbo(u)r, Arber, Harberer; Harbage, Herbage, Harbidge, Harbisher. The name also has several spelling in the genealogical record: Harber, Harbor, Harbour, and Arbar. All may or may not be related

Without an actual record of how the name began, we may draw a conclusion that it is derived from those who may have been inn keepers or individual families that offered protection from foe or the elements for others.

The branch of the Harbour Family with which I am concerned traces back to William Harbour who was born in Garboldisham, Norfolk, England. His date of birth was about 1753, I have his parents as Thomas Harper and Elizabeth Hunt but have not yet confermed this.
